Profile
Grown, value-based profile
The current study buildings are located exactly where the legendary Darmstadt artists' colony once realised its creative visions, in the middle of the historically inspiring Mathildenhöhe site: the tradition of the department dates back to 1907, when the artists' colony established the "Grand Ducal Teaching Studios for Applied Arts".
The two degree programmes in Industrial Design and Communication Design with a focus on photography bring together around 500 students. Courses form the basic framework of the degree programme. Students have the opportunity to experiment and develop independently in the workshops and laboratories as well as at their own workstations. Workshops and lectures by external guests, study visits to international partner universities and excursions are further exciting opportunities to gain a wide range of experience.
Teachers and students regularly present and reflect on the results of their work in exhibitions, publications, lectures and other formats - an approach that benefits both internal and external dialogue.

Communication design
with photography
Successful communication depends on both its content and its form. Communication design is the visual design of messages in order to convey information effectively and in a way that is appropriate for the target group. It includes appropriate graphic, typographic and photographic solutions for print and digital media or film.
industrial design
Versatile, dynamic/complex and future-orientated: The spectrum of fields of activity in industrial design is broad. Traditionally, it encompasses the design and development of specific objects or product systems. At the same time, industrial design deals with strategic design solutions - the planning, development, renewal and communication of interactions, processes and services.
