International
International exchange
The Department of Design is internationally engaged and networked in many ways. Internationality is a natural part of our teaching and research. We motivate our students to study at our partner universities abroad or to complete internships in foreign design studios. This incentive has paid off - graduates of our department are now working in renowned offices all over the world. We are also happy to welcome colleagues and students from abroad. Courses completed in Darmstadt can be recognized according to the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS).
Partner universities
Our department has contractual agreements with the following foreign universities for the exchange of students and lecturers - either as part of the ERASMUS+ program or in the form of bilateral agreements.

Their common motto: "Think Human First". In addition to h_da, the following are involved in the project:
Технически университет - София (Sofia University of Technology) (Bulgaria)
Université de technologie de Troyes (France)
Technological University Dublin (Ireland)
Rīgas Tehniskā universitāte (Lithuania)
Universitatea Tehnicǎ din Cluj-Napoca (Romania)
Universidad Politécnica de Cartagena (Spain)
Τεχνολογικό Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου (Cyprus University of Technology) (Cyprus).
Exchange programs
ERASMUS+
One of the most important funding instruments for international university exchanges in Europe is the ERASMUS+ program, which was introduced by the European Union 25 years ago and has been very successful ever since. It includes the "Student Mobility for Studies (SMS)" program line, which funds study visits, and the "Staff Mobility (ST)" program line, which is aimed specifically at lecturers and staff.
Detailed information on both funding lines can be found here:
Exchange with Switzerland
Semesters abroad in Switzerland are funded by the Swiss European Mobility Program (SEMP). Information on this can be found on the Movetia website.
Stays at other universities abroad
If you are planning a semester abroad at a university that is not one of our partner institutions, you can contact them yourself to find out about the conditions for a guest semester and - if your application is successful - about the possibility of entering into a partnership agreement. If no such contract is concluded, it is possible to spend the semester as a so-called "freemover", although tuition fees must then be paid, which vary in amount. The coursework completed there will of course be recognized by us.
Apply - here's how!
Studying at our partner universities is governed by an annual selection procedure that takes place in January. A stay abroad is generally only possible after the 4th semester (passed diploma preliminary examination). The application for a semester abroad can therefore be made in the 3rd semester at the earliest, but of course also at a later date.
Scholarships abroad and other
funding opportunities
Various organizations such as the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the Franco-German Youth Office (DFJW) and the German-American Fulbright Commission award scholarships for students and lecturers to spend time abroad. The application deadlines are sometimes one year before the planned departure. Students should therefore enquire about the relevant regulations as early as the 2nd semester.
You can find a summary overview of funding opportunities for stays abroad here.
Further information is available from our International Office.
Internship abroad
If you would like to complete an internship abroad within Europe, you can apply for the Erasmus Student Mobility for Traineeship (Placement) (SMP ) program.
