Aachen University Hospital’s Medical Centre

The Innovative Products & Systems (FIPS) research group, in collaboration with the Design Institute for Healthy Design, developed and implemented key conceptual foundations for the campus practice of the MVZ at the University Hospital of RWTH Aachen. The overarching aim of the overall project was to establish a general medical care service for students, staff and local residents, which, through the deployment of specialist medical staff and innovative telemedicine approaches, represented a first of its kind in the German healthcare landscape.

FIPS’s core contribution comprised the comprehensive development of an efficient and reliable organisational structure to streamline the complex processes of the future practice’s operations. In addition, the research group played a key role in designing the architectural and design aspects. This included providing scientifically sound input on spatial planning, the selection of materials and the final interior design, with a focus on the relevant themes of colour, light and acoustics.

Evidence-based and research-driven approaches enabled a multi-faceted analysis of future practice scenarios as early as the planning phase. Based on these simulations, an environment was created that has been proven to ensure an optimal atmosphere for patients and staff whilst also meeting the strict criteria for the preservation of the University Hospital’s existing architectural heritage.
